Self-Portraits (2020-Present)

Self-portraits are the scaffolding or armature for engaging my hand, for meeting the urgent need to get something down. Ever ready, I am the instantly available vehicle for test driving my sense of touch, coordination, and attitude. Early portraits were attached to likeness and finish. Recent self-portraits are culled from 5-minute reckonings – the first thing-in-the-morning-before coffee encounters after letting out the dogs and feeding the chickens. On good days my face comes off as I watch my negotiations with scrap paper, charcoal, photocopies, or what have you, and likeness is the least of it. On great days I'm able to get down to the bone, where the work takes off, leaving me and all my irksome habits in the dust.
