Coffee and Oranges in a Sunny Chair, McKinley Village Public Art, 2019

McKinley Village, Sacramento, CA

Commissioned by Encore-McKinley Village/Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission

As a public sculpture, Coffee and Oranges in a Sunny Chair aims to beckon, as if someone has dragged a cozy chair outside in which to read or to curl up in for a nap. The sculpture’s exaggerated scale evokes Alice in Wonderland, its folkloric whimsy suggesting an urban village as a haven for creative social life and imaginative   play. The title is taken from Sunday Morning, Wallace Stevens’s poetic meditation on the nature of place and what’s meaningful in life.
